Is it Time to Replace Your AC System?

When is the right time to replace your air conditioner? An air conditioner can last for about a decade, some soldier on for longer than that. You can replace parts that wear out and update the thermostat, but all AC units eventually need to be replaced. While this is a big investment in your home, it will also immediately  start saving you money in power bills and repair costs. Not to mention a cooler, more comfortable home.

The right time to replace your AC can determined by a few clear signs. If you are experiencing one or more of the following AC symptoms, then your AC may need to be replaced soon.

1. AC Repairs are Getting More Frequent

Air conditioner parts don’t all wear out at the same time, but they typically share a lifespan. If more than one of your AC parts needs replacing in a single year, or if every year brings more repairs, then it’s time for a replacement. With a new AC, all you need is an annual check-up and you’ll save on repairs for years before the new unit needs it’s first service.

2. Your Power Bill is Rising

When an AC wears out, it also gets less efficient. This means using more electricity to produce less cold air. To reach your thermostat’s set temperature, your AC will need more and more power every year, which can wreak havoc on your power bill. If your power bill is higher this summer than last summer, or shows a trend of increased power consumption, then it’s definitely time for a replacement.

3. You Hear Strange Sounds, or Smell Strange Smells

Trust your ears and your nose. If your AC is making banging sounds, it needs repair. If it regularly makes unusual sounds, it may need replacement. The same is true of strange smells If your AC smells of mildew, it needs cleaning and may have a breach in the system. If your AC smells of burning, it off and call a technician immediately. This could mean you will need to replace your AC immediately.

4. The Cooling is Irregular

Are you getting irregular cold air from the AC? If air pressure or air temperature are not consistent in your home, it could be that your AC is struggling to keep up. This could mean that the AC needs cleaning and repair, or your air conditioner might be on its last legs with a weakening final performance.

5. Your AC is Blowing Warm Air

Some ACs stop creating cold air, but still continue to circulate. This can happen if the cooling system goes out while the blower fan is intact. If your AC is blowing warm air in addition to other symptoms of poor performance, it may be time for replacement. It is certainly time to clean the coils and call for repairs.

6. The AC Cycles On/Off Constantly

An AC with power fluctuation issues is dangerous, and often a sign of old hardware. If your AC starts cycling on and off constantly  (on Auto or otherwise), first turn off and reset the thermostat. If your thermostat has batteries (some do), replace them. If the AC continues to cycle, turn it off and call a technician – it might be time to replace your air conditioner.

7. The AC Will Not Turn On, Turn Off, or Switch Modes

If your thermostat is functioning but the AC won’t’ turn on, switch modes, or won’t turn off, be careful. This is another type of power failure and could indicate a fault in the wiring. An AC that is having consistent power problems is likely near the end of its lifespan.

9. Your AC is Old Enough for Middle School

Finally, you can know it’s time to replace your AC by its’ age alone. Most air conditioners are designed to last about a decade, and some last up to 15 years. Most people don’t know how old their AC is, exactly, when they buy a house. But if your AC is probably old enough to attend middle school, then consider scheduling a replacement the next time your AC needs a serious repair, as it will likely be the first of many.
